Sea level rise is not a new phenomenon. For much of the 20th century, the global mean sea level has been inching upward – about 0,05 inches (1,4 millimeters) per year, according to the United Nations‘ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Global mean sea level is an average of all the seas covering the Earth. But during the last two decades, the rate has more than doubled. From 2005 to 2015, sea levels rose by 0,1 inches (3,6 mm) per year.
Many places are experiencing a rise as the global mean rises, but in a few places sea level is falling, said Jacky Austermann, an assistant professor of Earth and environmental sciences at Columbia University’s Lamont‑Doherty Earth Observatory in New York. „There’s not a place that’s immune from sea level change,“ Austermann told Live Science.

A deadly animal virus that causes fevers, abdominal pain, vomiting, bleeding gums, skin rash and pain behind the eyes can now spread between people, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced Monday (Nov. 16).
Until now, there had been only one confirmed case of Chapare virus, an Ebola‑like illness that turned up in the rural Bolivian province of Chapare in 2004 and then disappeared. But in 2019, at least five more people caught the bug, according to research now made public. The virus spread from person to person through bodily fluids in a region near Bolivia’s capital city of La Paz, killing three people. There are no active outbreaks of Chapare in 2020, and even in the event of further outbreaks the virus would be unlikely to cause a pandemic, according to virus experts.

On Oct. 26, a healthy baby girl was born from an embryo that had been frozen for 27 years, a possible record for the longest a human embryo has stayed frozen before being born, according to recent news reports.
Molly Everette Gibson was born from an embryo frozen in 1992 and stored in a cryogenic (ultra‑cold) freezer in the Midwest, according to The Washington Post. In 2012, the embryo was packed into a liquid nitrogen shipping container and sent to an embryo adoption facility; in February of this year, the embryo was implanted into now 29-year‑old Tina Gibson’s uterus, who was herself only one year old when the embryo was frozen.

A nine‑armed octopus caught off Japan’s coast nearly ended up being dinner, until the family preparing it noticed its extra limb and sent it to a museum instead, according to news sources.
While unusual, this extra appendage – which wasn’t fully formed, but a small offshoot on a regular arm – isn’t unheard of in octopuses, said Michael Vecchione, an invertebrate zoologist at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., who was not involved with this octopus’s discovery.
Octopuses are capable of regenerating their arms, but „sometimes regeneration doesn’t work quite right,“ Vecchione told Live Science. „If an arm gets damaged, it might regenerate wrong; it could wind up with extra tissue growing out, and that extra tissue could turn into an arm.“

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter captured an image of China’s Chang‘e 5 lander on the moon just hours after its historic landing. The Chang‘e 5 lander set down on the lunar surface last Tuesday, Dec. 1. Thanks to China’s prompt release of the stunning Chang‘e 5 landing video, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera (LROC) team were able to locate the roughly 4–ton spacecraft in Oceanus Procellarum, the „Ocean of Storms,“ and prepare for when LRO would pass overhead the next day. The image shows the Chang‘e 5 lander in the center of three craters. Automated systems had helped the spacecraft avoid these hazards to land safely. The relatively flat area near the Chang‘e 5 lander was created by basaltic lavas. While over a billion years old, this unit of basalt is thought to be much younger than the Apollo landing areas, which are aged at over 3 billion years. Samples are therefore of great interest to scientists, who want to know why this region was volcanically active much more recently than most other places on the moon. The image was taken before the Chang‘e 5 ascent vehicle blasted off from the surface with the collected samples. The ascent vehicle has since performed a spectacular rendezvous and docking with the Chang‘e 5 orbiter and handed over the samples. Chang‘e 5 will begin its journey to Earth later this week.
